Review: Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children

For the coming film adaption of the novel, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, I decided to take a delve into this curious tale myself.  Judging by the book's cover, you might think that this is a creepy children's book, possibly filled with unknown horrors.  Although man-eating monsters do roam the pages of this story, I wouldn't consider it so disturbing that it would ruin the overall experience.  Young, peculiar children may have to watch their backs, however.  They are the preferred meal.
Back to the lovely children's book: the story is about a young adolescent, named Jake, who goes on a journey to find out what happened to his seemingly disillusioned grandfather before his mysterious demise.  Jake's quest leads him down a path he never could have foreseen or imagined.  A world where there are people with amazing abilities, queer attributes,  and dangers only thought to be in fairy tales.  He discovers that his grandfather's stories were not the concoction of  a madman, but a legacy that was now his to carry.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar children is a well-crafted and enjoyable read for a variety of ages.  Although I personally think it fits with young teens better, older and younger readers can appreciate it as well, depending on their preferences.  The protagonist faces many similar obstacles that teens can relate to, emotionally and relationally.  I felt like the author did very well in showing the difficulties that teens face when they don't have family or friends that understand them.  Jake's loneliness and depression from losing his grandfather and his family convincing him that he was crazy, was something he needed to overcome in order to face the monsters.  Jake's story is a great example of finding love, friendship and confidence in the least likeliest of places. I am excited to see what happens in the sequel and the movie to come.
